Years of government creating crisis after crisis followed by the necessary “fixes” have created a colossal Gordian knot in U.S. medicine. Their solution: repeated government interventions and further collectivism in medicine — never mind that other socialist states have had no greater success in central planning, regulating, mandating, rationing and denying of medical care.

It was Napoleon who said, “If you plan to attack Vienna, take Vienna.” This refrain certainly epitomizes what the AAPS is doing to cut the Gordian knot that the government has made in Washington. Our plan is to provide individual access to medical care to the uninsured, provide true portability, and make that policy truly individually owned (by the employee, rather than the employer or the government, as is the case when one reaches the age of 65).

Yes, the AAPS is doing it! The Delta Force of American Medicine is presenting to its members, both professional and associate, a plan of medical coverage that incorporates a high-deductible catastrophic insurance policy and several Medical Savings Account (MSA) options for our consideration.

Presently, under the proposed AAPS medical insurance plan, policies are individually underwritten and extremely competitive with anything in the market today. When you reach age 65 and your golden years, this private, personal policy will continue to be the primary carrier as long as you maintain the premium payments and membership in AAPS.

We believe that if Congress gives us equal treatment under the law, the invisible hand of the free market will do the rest to bring down health care costs to reasonable levels. You see, the private patient when given full control over his medical decisions will act as a prudent consumer of medical care as he becomes responsible for his decisions. Given the proper incentives, he will act in his best interest.

Hopefully, in this narrow window of opportunity allowed in the Kassebaum-Kennedy Bill for the establishment of MSAs, AAPS will show the nation what Robert Jaggard, M.D. exhorted us: “There is only one way to do the right thing.”

Over the next several weeks, we will be publicizing AAPS’ all-encompassing medical care plan. But time is short and we must act before the opportunity is lost. Join us in the grand endeavor and let us retake Vienna. Let us once again enjoy the free market and the practice of private medicine — as it was always meant to be!
